PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd, the biggest winner with five awards
from last year’s SOBA, shared during a help desk session that interested
participants should focus their resources on categories they feel most
confident about and not submit entries for too many categories.
“Identify and prioritise the categories you think you stand the most chance of winning,” a representative of the company said.
“It is also important to present your submissions in a concise and easy
yet interesting to read manner, to help the judges understand your

Managing Director/Chief executive Officer Datuk Adissadikin Ali said the RM5 billion target was more than achievable.
"We are half-way there to achieve the target and hope things will move faster in the second half of the year," he said at a breaking fast function with 43 orphans from Rumah Kebajikan Baitul Hidayah in Puchong, Selangor, on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Adissadikin also said the bank had set aside RM180 million to assist entrepreneurs to venture into the restaurant business abroad but the take up rate was discouraging as only RM20 million has been disbursed so far.
"Malaysians should grab this opportunity. The restaurants can be located anywhere in the world for any kind of cuisine as long as it has a Malaysian identity," he said.
On the bank's non-performing loans (NPLs), he said it had been declining since 2010 and Exim Bank was on track to reduce its NPLs to single-digit this year.
During the event, the bank also presented a cheque for more than RM5,000 to the home for its upkeep.

Moody's Affirms A3 Of Exim Bank Of Malaysia, Raises Baseline Credit Assessment
SINGAPORE, June 25 (Bernama) -- Moody's Investors Service has affirmed
the A3 foreign currency senior unsecured debt and issuer ratings of
Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd (MEXIM), as well as its (P)A3 senior
unsecured medium term note (MTN) programme rating.

Published: Jun 26, 2013
In addition, it has revised the bank's baseline credit assessment (BCA) to ba3 from b1 following improvements in MEXIM's standalone credit profile.
The outlook on all MEXIM's ratings remains stable.
MEXIM's A3 senior unsecured rating is driven by its intrinsic credit strength, as reflected by its BCA of ba3, and six notches of uplift stemming from Moody's support assumptions.
At A3, MEXIM's senior unsecured debt rating is in line with the A3 rating for the government of Malaysia.
It also reflects its government ownership, its important policy role in providing financial services to Malaysian trade-oriented companies and cross-border businesses for which there is no or limited private-sector alternative offering, and Malaysia's history of lending support to government-related institutions and banks.
Furthermore, although explicit support is not mandated, the bank's receipt of guarantees provided on its borrowings in 1999, liquidity support in 2007, and recapitalisation through a loan-to-equity conversion in 2008 are tangible evidence of support in the past.
This track record of support reinforces Moody's view that the bank will continue to benefit from government assistance, if needed.
Moody's said the upward revision of MEXIM's BCA to ba3 from b1 reflects the steady improvements in the bank's asset quality and liquidity over the past three years, which reflect in turn its improved risk management culture and practices since an internal re-organisation and transformation in 2008.
Although the bank's capital level has declined with business growth, Mooody's said the development is in line with its expectations.
At end-2012, its Tier 1 capital ratio was 41.3 per cent.
Moody's expects its capitalisation to remain sufficient to withstand shocks at its current rating level.
The stable ratings outlook reflects Moody's expectations that the bank's overall credit fundamentals will remain stable, underpinned by its improved risk management capabilities, in turn supporting its business growth and asset quality.

Moody's Sahkan Penarafan A3 Atas Exim Bank Malaysia, Naikan Kredit Asas
SINGAPURA, 25 Jun (Bernama) -- Moody's Investors Service mengesahkan
penarafan A3 terbitan dan hutang bercagar senior dan penilaian penerbit
Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd (MEXIM), serta penarafan program MTN
bercagar senior A3 (P).
Source from (Bernama): http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v7/bm/bu/newsbusiness.php?id=958850

There’s more to branding than just spending on ads, promotions - Exim Bank
GEORGE TOWN: Branding is not just about spending a big sum of money on advertisements and promotional programmes, says Branding Association of Malaysia (BAM) deputy president Datuk Yusra Sabar.

Yusra: ‘Branding is not something you can see, touch, or feel, because
it is something you do on a daily basis without being aware of it.’
“Spending large sum on advertisements is marketing strategy and not what branding is all about. Branding is not something you can see, touch, or feel, because it is something you do on a daily basis without being aware of it.
“Branding is about how you talk to the customers, how you personally communicate with them about products, and how the products are positioned to develop emotional attachment for them,” he said.
Yusra spoke on the topic Taking Your Company To The Top Through Branding and Marketing at the The Star Business Awards (SOBA) Learning Series 2013 themed “Winning Strategies for Today's Companies”.
Other speakers included Star Publications senior regional manager David Yeoh, Leaderonomics talent acceleration head Vinesh Naidu, EXIM Bank promotion, marketing and support business division head Visualingam Veeraperumal, and Penang Adventist Hospital chief executive officer Dr Wesley Toh See Wei.
“Apple can succeed so well because the people in the organisation understand very well the ways to interact with the customers effectively, creating emotional attachment in them for Apple products.
“Thus it is important to create emotional attachment in customers for your products in order to conquer new markets,” Yusra said.
Meanwhile, speaking on the topic From Local to Global, Visualingam said a strong single-digit percentage growth in the demand for EXIM Bank's banking facilities and credit in insurance coverage could be expected this year.
“Since early this year, we have seen more queries and demand for these products. Local companies looking to emerging countries for fresh opportunities are taking up our banking facilities to support their overseas business ventures.
“Similarly, to protect against losses arising from political unrest overseas and bankruptcies, local companies are also increasing their take up of credit insurance coverage,” he said.
Visualingam said countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myannmar, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia were attracting a lot of interest and investments from Malaysian companies.
“Usually the overseas investments are in the oil and gas, construction, agriculture and manufacturing sectors,” he added.
Vinesh, in his presentation on Talent and People Management for 21st Century Business, said it was important for companies to decide whether they were recruiting talents to maintain the existing business process or to innovate and grow the company.
“Once they have made the decision, it is easier for them to identify and recruit the right people.
“When recruiting, companies should not just look at skills and capabilities but also the attitude and culture of the talents,” he said.
He said it was also important for companies to continuously assess the talents' performance and their future potential.
“This would enable companies to better differentiate their human resources from the perspective of performance management and recognition, which is important to boost morale and retain talents,” he said.
Yeoh, in his talk on Using the Media To Move Your Company Forward, said companies should establish long-term relationship with the media.
“From such a relationship, they will know that the best time for their stories to appear is during a slow news day. In the news room, stories from all over the country come in daily, and your story has to compete with them for a prominent space.
“Thus during a slow news day, your story will receive more attention,” he said.
Meanwhile, in his SOBA success story talk, Toh said that last year, one third of the 250,000 patients treated annually at Penang Adventist Hospital were from overseas.
“We are known overseas for our holistic approach to care for patients. On top of providing medical treatment, the holistic approach cares for the patient through the immediate family, and also looking after his or her spiritual and psychological needs.
“Our holistic approach are made known overseas via roadshows and health talks.
“In Malaysia, our holistic approach has enabled us to reach out effectively to the local community. That is why the local community refers to Penang Adventist Hospital as Our Hospital',” he said.
Penang Adventist Hospital won the best in CSR platinum award and best in marketing silver award at SOBA 2012.

Star Publications (M) Bhd associate editor (editorial affairs) T. Selva said companies should develop a smart partnership with editorial and advertising to enjoy a win-win situation.
He said research had shown that news articles were six times more powerful than an advertisement.
“Owing to this, entrepreneurs should engage and develop business partnerships with the media so that they can produce content for each, meet the deadlines of each, adhere to specific style requirements and appeal to each medium’s audience.
“Studies have also revealed that media is the most credible source of information and acts as being the most powerful conduit to shaping people’s beliefs and behaviour,” Selva said.
He said this ahead of The Star Business Awards (SOBA) Learning Series 2013, which will be held on June 21 at the Puteri Pacific Hotel in Johor. The workshop is themed “Winning Strategies for Today’s Companies”.
Selva will be presenting a talk titled Using The Media To Move Your Company Forward and will highlight the Malaysian media landscape, how to keep up with print and online diversity and promoting brand through the media.
He will also provide tips on how to handle the media in a crisis because the manner a company handles the situation may influence how internal and external public will perceive the company for years to come.
He said a true crisis was a turning point, after which things might change drastically, and if an organisation was not prepared to deal with the crisis, it was in constantly at risk.
The talk in Johor will also feature speakers from EXIM Bank, Branding Association of Malaysia and Leaderonomics.
SOBA pays tribute to up-and-coming local, non-listed companies and small and medium-sized enterprises striving to carve a niche for themselves in the world of business.
It marks the achievements of enterprises that have made a difference to the nation’s economy and opened new frontiers.
SOBA 2013 is organised by The Star with EXIM Bank as presenter. It is supported by Bursa Malaysia and audited by BDO.
The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur is the official hotel partner, Red Tomato the official Chinese newspaper, and 988FM and RedFM the official radio stations.
This year, the panel of judges will comprise representatives from the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Association Of Accredited Advertising Agents of Malaysia, Branding Association of Malaysia, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, Malaysian Advertisers Association, Media Specialist Association, Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, SMI Association of Malaysia, as well as EXIM Bank Bhd.

On a year-on-year basis, its asset size expanded by 16 per cent to RM7.3 billion last year, which is equivalent to one per cent of GDP.
Exim Bank is a government-owned development financial institution providing credit facilities to support exports and imports of goods, services and overseas projects.
"We are benchmarking ourselves against peers, such as the Exim banks of South Korea and China.
"Their total assets to GDP are three per cent and we are just at one per cent.
"We want our total asset size to be at least three per cent of GDP by 2018," said Exim Bank chief executive Datuk Adissadikin Ali in a press briefing on its financial year 2012 performance last Friday.
In order to achieve the target within the stipulated time frame, Exim Bank has to sustain a 30 per cent loan growth momentum annually.
Since the bank revised its business model in 2011, there has been a significant improvement in its financial performance.
Exim Bank's net loans and financing grew by 62 per cent to RM3.15 billion last year, compared with RM1.9 billion in 2011.
The construction sector constituted the largest chunk with a total disbursement of RM1.13 billion, followed by manufacturing and mining sectors.
It is targeting a total loan disbursements of RM5 billion this year.

EXIM Bank Aims To Raise Total Assets To 3 Per Cent Of GDP By 2018

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Adissadikin Ali said the bank has made the benchmark in order to achieve the same performance level of the export-import banks in Korea and China.
"This is what we aspire to be, we look at the total asset size against the size of GDP," he said during the financial year 2012 results briefing here today.
"Currently, the company's total assets are less than one per cent of the country's GDP," he added.
He said to achieve this target the bank needs to grow its loan book at least 30 per cent year-on-year.
"Last year, the bank's net loans and financing grew by 62 per cent to RM3.151 billion from RM1.943 billion in 2011, which is double the company's target.
"This year we are targeting to disburse a total of RM5 billion, up from 2012's total disbursement of RM3 billion," he added.
He said EXIM Bank recorded a net non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of about 10 per cent in 2012, and this year the aim is to bring it down to a single digit.
Asked on the Syariah financing segment's contribution to its total loan disbursement, he said the Islamic loan division grew a commendable 14 per cent last year from five per cent in 2011.
"This year, we aim to increase the syariah loan and financing segment's contribution to our total loan disbursement to 20 per cent and 30 per cent within two years," he added.
EXIM Bank posted a higher pre-tax profit of RM169.7 million for the year ended Dec 31, 2012, a 16 per cent increase from RM146.4 million in 2011.
The higher profit was mainly driven by the banking business' improved overall performance, other operating income and Islamic business, with lower allowances on loans.
Adissadikin said the bank's initiatives, which include improvements in vigilance, have started to show positive results.
"The bank is now at its best since 2008," he added.
