More Than 300 Retail Shops Transformed Under TUKAR Programme

PORT KLANG, July 13 (Bernama) -- A total of 338 retail shops premises have transformed under the Retail Shop Transformation Programme (TUKAR) while 300 more are on the waiting list. Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob said retail shops which were unable to undergo the transformation this year, would be included in the next year's list.

"Last year, a total of 519 retail premises were transformed under the Tukar programme," he told reporters after visiting the Pappathy Provision Store, a grocery store that benefited from the programme, at Jalan Kem here.

Ismail said the government allocated a total of RM50 million this year for the Tukar programme of which RM14.23 million been channeled to the beneficiaries through Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Bhd.

He noted that each of retail shop under the Tukar programme was given a loan of RM60,000 for renovation and RM20,000 for working capital this year, as compared to last year whereby only RM60,000 was given for renovation purposes.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) Tower in KUALA LUMPUR, Ismail said the quota for cooking oil would be increased by 10 per cent from the original of 70,000 tonnes a month during Ramadan.

He said the increase was to meet higher demand from consumers.

He said this after witnessing the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SSM, the Cooperatives College of Malaysia (MKM) and Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa). The MoU was to strengthen cooperative operations in the country.
