RM456,000 stolen from ATMs - Tabung Haji

PONTIAN: Two robbers broke into two ATMs here and made off with close to half a million ringgit. Pontian OCPD Supt Zahaliman Jamin said the robbers used a metal saw to cut open the machines at the Tabung Haji building at about 4am yesterday.

He said the two entered the ATM room and covered the CCTV camera with duct tape before breaking into two of the four machines there.

“They stole RM456,000 from the machines,” he said.

Supt Zahaliman said CCTV footage showed that just as the men entered the ATM room, a trailer stopped in front of the building to prevent passers-by from seeing the robbery.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.

Supt Zahaliman said there was a similar case where a man attempted to break open a Maybank ATM at the Benut post office here at about 2am yesterday.

“There were burn marks at the side of the machine but the man failed to open the ATM,” he said, adding that the two cases are believed to be linked.
