Such a relationship would help raise awareness about a product or an event, and present an opportunity to reach out to new customers in big numbers, said Star Publications senior regional manager David Yeoh.

“It allows companies to have their say,” he said ahead of The Star Business Awards (SOBA) Learning Series 2013 to be held here on Friday at Trader's Hotel. The workshop is themed Winning Strategies for Today's Companies.

“A healthy relationship with the media enables advertisers to learn what is newsworthy,” said Yeoh.

“At the news desk, we receive stories from all over, each competing for prominence either in print or online.

“Knowing what is a newsworthy story will help companies issue an effective press release with all the relevant content and background information for an article.

“Essentially, newsworthy stories will help companies reach out to more customers and gain credibility in the market,” Yeoh added.

Yeoh will speak on Using The Media To Move Your Company Forward.

Other speakers include EXIM Bank banking promotion, marketing, and reporting head Visualingam Veeraperumal who will speak on From Local to Global, Branding Association of Malaysia deputy president Datuk Yusra Sabar on Taking Your Company To The Top Through Branding and Marketing, and Leaderonomics talent acceleration head Vinesh Naidu on Talent and People Management for 21st Century Businesses.

SOBA pays tribute to up-and-coming local, non-listed companies and small-and medium-sized enterprises striving to carve a niche for themselves in the world of business.

It marks the achievements of enterprises that have made a difference to the nation's economy and opened new frontiers.

SOBA 2013 is organised by The Star with EXIM Bank as presenter.

It is supported by Bursa Malaysia and audited by BDO. The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur is the official hotel partner, Red Tomato the official Chinese newspaper, and 988FM and RedFM the official radio stations.

This year, the panel of judges will comprise representatives from the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Association Of Accredited Advertising Agents of Malaysia, Branding Association of Malaysia, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, Malaysian Advertisers Association, Media Specialist Association, Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, SMI Association of Malaysia, SMI Association of Malaysia, as well as EXIM Bank Bhd.
